French Connections Concert!

DSCN0686French Connections

Friday and Saturday, April 3 & 4, 2015 8:00pm

Center of Creative Arts (COCA) 524 Trinity Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63130

Karlovsky & Company Dance presents French Connections, a full-length concert of new works inspired by French language, history, music, and art. Through international and local collaboration, French Connections creates a mélange of innovative movement, video, and live music that pays tribute to the French heritage of St. Louis reflecting on its 250th Anniversary celebration. French Connections exhibits extraordinary dancing by the members of Karlovsky & Company Dance through original choreography by Dawn Karlovsky and by Los Angeles guest choreographer Doris Ressl of Ressl Dance! with her national premiere of Volante´.

The inspiration to create French Connections commenced with the recent residency of Artistic Director, Dawn Karlovsky, in Nérac, France, where she collaborated and performed site-specific work with French-based visual artist Marie Binder and dancer Martine Fontaine, director of Cie Haute Tension. Karlovsky’s premiere of Entre Nous, a three-part solo work, reflects on the movement, the dialogue, the video documentation, and the landscape these artists shared during this international performance collaboration.

The third featured work is the premiere of “De La Vie et De L’Amour” (Of Life and Love) choreographed by Dawn Karlovsky. This 30-minute piece integrates dance, theater, live music, voice, and video into a seamless dance experience illuminating aspects of French culture, music, and poetry.

In St. Louis, the collaboration continues with local musicians joining the dancers onstage including performances by classical vocalist Lauren Honz, singing Beau Soir by Debussy, Lance Garger performing Trois Danses de Travers by Erik Satie, and cellist Tracy Andreotti, performing an original, French inspired composition. Join us for an evening of kinetically exciting, emotionally stirring, and athletically fluid dance!

In Minnesota she is known for her site-specific dance event, Dances on the Lakewalk, held in Duluth, MN along Lake Superior and presented by her company, Ressl Dance!.  Ressl Dance! formed in 1989 and continues to perform and hold residencies throughout Minnesota and in California.  She received an Arts Leadership Award for contributions to dance in Minnesota along with receiving numerous grants and fellowships in Minnesota and California.

In the spring of 2015 she will be a guest choreographer for Karlovsky & Company Dance in St. Louis, choreograph for Archinectic, a site-specific event held in the LA area, and leap into the role of interim chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance.  Looking forward to the summer, Ressl will choreograph a piece on the Christopher Watson Dance Company and once again present Dances on the Lakewalk in July.
